MIDWESTERN SUICIDE PREVENTION COUNCIL

The Midwestern Suicide Prevention Coalition: Connect to Life, is a collaborative group of dedicated community members and stakeholders who meet on a monthly basis. The Coalition works to reduce the incidence of suicide and suicide attempts in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, Gunnison, Hinsdale, and San Miguel Counties.

Connect to Life Goals:

   Education and Awareness

   Treatment and Services

   Screening for Depression and Anxiety

   Referrals

   Post-vention

   Resource and Data Follow-up

The SAFE:TEEN program is a comprehensive suicide prevention program for adolescents being implemented in the middle schools and high schools in our communities. The program will be presented in health classes at the schools. The SAFE:TEEN program provides life skills training to students, faculty members and parents by educating them to recognize the signs of suicide. It will also provide the tools and skills necessary to identify persons at risk and how to connect students who are at risk with help through evaluation and services.

Blues: Not a Normal Part of Aging and Feel Good Bingo are programs that are conducted at assisted living centers, nursing homes, senior centers, care centers, and anywhere else a request has been made for the program. The primary goal is to educate older adults, caregivers, supporters and families on ways to identify feelings of older individuals. It is also used to determine what a "normal" range of feelings might be, as opposed to a more serious indication of depression.

To request more information or to participate in any of these programs, please contact the Suicide Prevention Office at (970)252-3228.

OTHER TRAININGS ON SUICIDE PREVENTION PROVIDED THROUGH THE COALITION AND MIDWESTERN COLORADO MENTAL HEALTH CENTER:

APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING (ASIST)

The ASIST training is a two day workshop designed to give participants the

knowledge and skills to intervene with individuals at risk of suicide.

     QUESTION, PERSUADE AND REFER (QPR)

The QPR training is a one training designed to educate participants on how to

question a person at risk of suicide, persuade them to seek help, and refer them

     to a professional.

     SUICIDE TALK

Suicide talk is a condensed version of the ASIST training, approximately four

hours. Suicide talk is designed to give participants information on suicide

     intervention and resources.

Initial funding to establish the Coalition and prevention projects came through a grant from The Colorado Trust. Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center established an internal program as a follow up to the grant called the Midwestern Office of Suicide Prevention. The Office of Suicide Prevention continues in the work to increase public awareness and knowledge about suicide and suicide prevention. Information is presented at community events and health fairs in all six counties of Region 10. Educational information has also been disseminated to the public through the media, including radio talk shows with educational pieces and ads appearing on television, the radio, and in newsprint, including high school published newspapers. The Office of Suicide Prevention conducts free screenings for the public for depression, anxiety and substance abuse.
